Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
by Shawn J. Barks

I have something,
Most people my age don't have it.
I feel like an old person,
But I am only a teenager.

People look at me weird,
When I park in a handicapped spot.
They think that I am perfectly fine,
They don't know about this disease running through me.

I take more prescription drugs,
Than a drug addict.
The doctor says the medications are going to help,
But I know that medicine will never truly cure me.

My joints grind every day,
Just trying to get out of bed.
I can sometimes hear the sound,
Like fingernails on a chalkboard.

I hurt so bad at times,
I just want to cry.
I pray to God every night,
Wondering why I am the one with this.

Sometimes I feel so tired at times,
All my energy drained from my body.
I just want to curl up into a ball,
and fade away.
