Back to Birmingham.
On Sunday morning church bells will ring in Birmingham, and the partiers at the Quest, a private 24-hour dance club, won't hear them. It's part of the dichotomy that defines Birmingham today. And, after Friday, October 26, when the first A-Games were held in Hoover, a suburb of Birmingham, the city is also defined as a Creaky town. Just ask the Governor. He declared Friday CreakyJoints day in Alabama.
This is important for only one reason: seniors, as old as 95, at the Galleria Woods Retirement Community in Hoover took charge of their lives and learned, in a day, additional ways to manage pain, be happy and live fuller lives. That's what CreakyJoints is all about. The local NBC TV station covered the event, and Seth did a live spot on FOX's morning show (clips will be posted on the site soon).
So even if it is virtually impossible to find sparkling mineral water at a Birmingham restaurant, it is possible to find motivated people who respond positively to suggestions from world-class coaches from Total Immersion, and who are dedicated to finding better ways to live, no matter what their age. I saw the first example of this in January at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex in Coral Springs, Fla., when 11-year-old Ricky Oxenhandler came to the pool to work out with us for the local Miami television crew who was covering our event there. He had just gotten out of a wheelchair, and his arthritis wasn't as bad as it had been. Whether it is an 11-year-old, or a 95-year-old, or boomers who are in undiagnosed pain after strenuous exercise, CreakyJoints is bringing a new and positive pain management message to people across the country. And, this dog is having fun doing it.
