October 2003 There’s no question it’s autumn in New York. And it’s not because the cab drivers are wearing flannel turbines (a-la Letterman), and it’s not because of the influx of candy corn. It’s because my knees and my hip and my back ache more now than for the past 6 months. This past weekend I celebrated my birthday, yet again. I don’t feel any older but I do wonder where I was and what I was thinking about last year, 5 years ago and even 10 years ago on that day. Like a fine wine-in-a-box (under $5.99) I’m getting better with age. So it’s not every weekend you get to meet about a thousand doctors from all around the world. We’re talking Anchorage, Burma (or Myanmar, depending on how good his English is), Columbia, Tokyo and of course, Vancouver. CreakyJoints exhibited at the Annual American College of Rheumatology scientific meeting, and we had a giant map of the world where doctors would put pins in their cities once they signed up to work with us throughout their communities. Poor Canada: they were reminded of how bad my geography was every time. Sure, remote cities in Greenland were easily found, Eastern/New Europe countries, no problem…but Montreal? Took about 45 minutes to find. For the second and third time. We plan to work with these doctors all around the world next year, which is why we went to the meeting this year. The response was great, and we’re looking forward to planning a global program to help as many people as possible. The weekend went relatively undisturbed until a dinner at Bahama Breeze. I finally lost my cool. I guess I’ve just gotten sick of waiters or waitresses asking if I’ve ever been to that restaurant, and if I say "no", telling me how the menu works. "You see, appetizers are here, and you’ll get those first. Then main entrees are on this page and they’ll serve as your main meal. Specials are listed on the following page. Do you have any questions?" So I finally asked a question. "How much is a hamburger?" "Sir, it’s written right there: $7.99." I just had to make sure. She got the message. Do I think I'll ever feel better? No. |
