This is the summer I take back my life and begin enjoying it again. I’m not going to let ‘limited mobility in my left hip’ or ‘swelling, aching and radiographic changes’ affect what I do on the weekends anymore. I love golfing because it’s a fun game and it’s nice to be outdoors when the weather is nice. But I also love it because I was told that eventually I’d have to stop playing and I love it because I am not letting my body tell me what I can do.

So when I tee off on the first hole this season – hopefully – it’ll be a great feeling. A triumph, in a way. Because even though I’m not going to win the long-drive contest, I’m still out there, still having fun, and still pushing myself both physically and mentally. Life isn’t always about winning. In this case, it’s just about playing.

Needless to say there’s been a lot of traveling going on. Between meeting up with Joe for the Arthritis Huddle physician programs and then shooting down to Florida for our first patient event, we have been quite busy.

Amazingly, for the first time that I can remember, I’ve been able to smell spring. I was so fed up with my seasonal allergies that I took charge. I went to the allergist and demanded a cocktail of drugs to clear my head up and keep me from sneezing every 3 seconds. It was that or buy stock in Kleenex. So we found the right combination of drugs – drugs I had no idea even existed – and I’m all clear.

My hand on the other hand (is that a pun?) – that’s a different story. This week I started a whole new set of medicine – older NSAID’s that are supposed to work well – in hopes that things will clear up. So to speak. But with any luck it’s just the weather and all this travel. Because I’d like to open my own Gatorades again.
