September 2006 It's September 11th, 2006. Today I was reminded, as I am often, that there are larger problems than my arthritis. My thoughts are with the families of our fallen friends, relatives and neighbors. I’m in a weird position this week. The other day I was sitting on the couch reading a newspaper when my left hand began hurting. Like a lot. As if someone smacked it with a hammer. I had no idea what the problem was, but I knew it was a problem. The first thought I had was “oh no, I knew I shouldn’t have cracked my knuckles all these years!” but deep down I knew that had nothing to do with it. I turned to my friend (who was also reading a newspaper) and said “I think I just got very arthritic very quickly” and showed him my swollen left hand and demonstrated my inability to straighten my fingers. “Sucks, huh?” he said, and I agreed. I put some ice on it and fell asleep from mostly natural causes five minutes after he left. Needless to say, I wasn’t a happy camper. When I woke up the next morning, my hand was still hurting. Not quite as badly, but the ache and pain is definitely there. The same goes for today, two days later, which brings me to my weird position. What do I do? Ordinarily when something like this happens we call our doctor and we go see him or her for treatment. And while I nearly did that, I took a minute to wonder what he’d say or do and I wholeheartedly decided to “wait it out”. So here I sit, waiting this thing out, wondering how many days I’ll let it go for. Week? Month? I don’t think I can take a month like this, but I also don’t think it’s worth creating an emergency over. I have a feeling I’m not the only person who has ever had this problem before. I really hope it will go away! So the big question remains…what do I do? |

Seth, have you tried heat instead of ice? When my hands flare up I try soaking them in water as hot as I can stand or wrap in a wet hot wash cloth and wrap that with plastic wrap- it holds heat in longer. It won't help the swelling but will ease the pain for a little bit. I also suffer from Ra, Fibro and have ganglions on my right hand, so I have a lot of trouble with my hands. Good luck, Karen |
